2026 mileage deduction calculator
2026 has two IRS business mileage rates — 72.5¢ before July 1 and 76¢ after. Enter your miles for each half of the year and this works out the correct combined deduction, plus roughly what it is worth in tax.
Why two rates
The IRS set 72.5¢ effective January 1, 2026 (Notice 2026-10, announced in IR-2025-128), then raised it to 76¢ for expenses paid or incurred on or after July 1, 2026 (Announcement 2026-11, in IRB 2026-29). Full detail on the 2026 rate page.
A deduction is not a refund
The single most common mistake is reading "76¢ per mile" as "76¢ back." It isn't. A deduction reduces the income you are taxed on. What it is actually worth depends on your marginal rate — plus, for self-employed drivers, the 15.3% self-employment tax, which is why the saving is larger than your income bracket alone suggests.
